The Power of Your Identity on Changing Your Life
It’s just after 6 am here and Rain and Zak are in still snoozing in bed.
Last night we hung out with friends we hadn’t seen in a while, and it felt so good to our families together again.
This past week I coached and connected with people across the globe to answer their questions about becoming a life coach. It was so much fun!
My favorite thing in the world is to help people discover what’s possible for them so they can step into a brand-new life.
And what I know for sure is that changing your life –for good –isn’t as hard as you’ve been led to believe.
So today, what’s on my heart to share with you is a proven way to change your life that doesn’t require white-knuckling it or willpower.
Because… seriously.
As you’ve heard me say before…
The story you tell your self about your self creates your SELF. (aka SELF Made)
Your SELF is also known as your Identity.
And your Identity is one of, if not THE most powerful things you can use to change your life.
We all have Identities. And we make “identity statements”.
Some of them can be wonderful…
- I finish what I start.
- I’m the kind of person who shows up for my family, no matter what.
And some… not so much…
- I’m an introvert
- I’m not good at business
- I’m terrible with relationships
- I’m not a morning person
- I’m terrible with directions
- I’m bad at math.
But these are all just stories.
And once again for the people in the back…
The story you tell your self about your self creates your SELF. So, I invite you to spend some time today looking at your future SELF.
Assuming you have everything you just envisioned, how would that future you behave every day?
What time would you get up?
What would you eat?
How would you dress?
What would be important to you?
What would you prioritize?
How much time do you spend on social? With friends? Meditating? Working out?
Once you have a good understanding of how your future SELF behaves…
You will create identity statements for yourself based on that future by starting with this phrase…
“I’m the kind of person who…”
You’ll complete this sentence with things like:
- Gets up within 10 mins of alarm going off
- Does what I say I’ll do
- Works out 5 days a week at 7am even when I don’t want to
- Doesn’t do overwhelm
- Makes $10k/month as a coach
If you focus on letting your behavior reflect the Identity of your future self every day, instead of fixating on your current self, your beliefs about who you are change. Which means your behaviors change. Which means… Your LIFE changes!
It evolves into exactly what you want!
So you, my beautiful friend, can step boldly into your future self with grace, no willpower needed.
I call this Identity-Based Coaching and we offer it exclusively at The Modern Life Coach School.
Ok… One last tip before I head down to refill my coffee… Once you are clear on your future SELF, ask yourself with everything you do…
How would the person I want to be do the thing I’m about to do?
Then act accordingly. To the future you!
