Why Turning Your Passion Into a Business is a HUGE Mistake

What are you up to?

Me? Oh, you knowwwww… I’m sitting here with a fancier cup of coffee today than usual – an Americano with a splash of hazelnut cream.

I know… getting wild.

Typically, I’m a straight up double Americano girl. I like it simple and clean.

Anyway, who cares Cynthia.

So, this week was life as usual.

We watched the movie, Strange Darlings, and omgggggg. It was SO good!

No, seriously. The trailer will fool you but this was one of the most creative, beautiful, innovative film I’ve seen in years. 10 out of 5 stars!

We also started watching Investigation Alien on Netflix. Have you seen it?

Zak is obsessed with aliens and what we know and don’t know so, that. Episode 1 and 2 were great. Episode 3 was meh but we’ll see what happens in the next one.

Oh, and I also FINALLY got my CA driver’s license! Lol

I knowwww I’ve lived here 20 years but for the last several years, I was an Oregon resident because we spent more time there than we did in LA but now (thank god) those days are overrrr!

Finally… this week I saw my one of my clients launch her program and make $40k in sales in one hour!

I’m SO proud of her and what she’s created.

The funny thing is, she had pretty much retired in her business but knew she had the skills to turn her work into a certification program so other people could use it to make money.

I helped her do that with The Certification Model and now, she’s leaving her legacy.

Now… you might not be at that same point in your business. In fact, you might just be thinking about starting a business.

If so, I have some great words of wisdom for you today.

And it just might surprise you!

It has to do with turning your passion into a business.

And why you shouldn’t.

You heard me.

Listen… There are also things I’m deeply passionate about that I’ll never ever turn into a business.

Like my art. You may not know this but I’ve been an artist since I was young.

I’m currently in my abstract art era, working on a series influenced by mental health.

Would I ever sell my art or do it for money? No. Never.

And I don’t think you should sell YOUR passion either.

In fact… some of the worst fucking advice floating around the interwebs.

Why I Don’t Think You Should Turn Your Passion Into A Business…

Ok… Let’s have some real talk about this age-old quote you’ve probably heard a thousand times…

“Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life!”

That quote? It’s complete bullshit.

No, really.

In fact, it’s one of the worst, most stupid-as-fuck pieces of “wisdom” floating around out there.

Whoever came up with it CLEARLY never turned their passion into a business because if they had, they’d know that shit falls apart real fast.

Here’s the actual truth…

Turning your passion or what you love into a business is a mistake because then it stops being your happy place.

It becomes a job. An obligation.

And if there’s one thing I know, it’s that obligation is a passion killer.

Take one of my clients, for example. She LOVED baking, so she thought, “Why not turn my passion into a business? I’ve heard that’s the way to go.”

So, she opened a bakery, thinking she’d spend her days happily baking delicious shit and living her best life.

But that “dream” turned into a goddamn nightmare.

Instead of baking up happiness, she was bogged down with ordering supplies, dealing with payroll (she had hired someone to help), managing complaints, doing the motherfucking bookkeeping—the whole nine yards.

And baking? Well that became the LAST thing she had time for.

One day, she called me in tears because she’d messed up a batch of brownies.

And these brownies?

They weren’t just a messed-up treat; they were lost profits, damaged reputation, and stress rolled into one.

Her passion had turned into a high-stakes hustle. So now, she’s either hiring someone else to do the thing she once loved, or working her ass off all hours.

Baking was no longer her joy—it was her jail.

And that, my friend, is what happens when you let your passion become your paycheck.

The thing you love? It turns into the thing you resent.

Do What You’re Good At—Not What You’re Passionate About

Here’s the takeaway (because you know I have one)…

Don’t chase your passion to pay the bills. Do what you’re good at.

Use your skills, the things that don’t drain the life out of you, and build something that makes you money while giving you the freedom to actually enjoy your passions.

Because when you’re making bank doing what you’re good at, you don’t need to drag your passion into it.

You’re free to keep what you love just for you.

Here’s the last thing I’ll say…

Not everything you love needs to become a business.

In fact, some things SHOULDN’T, no matter what “they” say.

The REAL goal here isn’t to turn your passion into a business.

It’s to build a life where you have the time and money freedom to enjoy your passions without needing them to pay the bills.

So, let’s drop the fairy tale that turning your passion into a business is the secret to happiness.

It’s not.

Focus on building a business with your skills and talents that allows you to live your passions instead.
