Don’t Waste Your Energy, Focus On What Really Matters!
Zak and I went to a new Italian restaurant this week (my fave kind of food) and experienced what can only be called shocking.
Long story short, it was our first time there, and we did what many people do –we asked for a recommendation.
After going with the owner’s recommendation, we actually didn’t like the dish. No big deal.
So, in a very kind way, we asked to order something else, happy to pay for the other food too. It was no more and no less than that.
What happened next was wild!
The owner proceeded to come to our table, angry and triggered.
He was sweating and basically told us we had no taste and that we should go to Olive Garden.
#recordscratch
What just happened here??
We were thrown for a loop and I can honestly say I’ve never been treated so rudely at a restaurant –especially when there was absolutely no reason for it.
At first, I was livid. Who talks to anyone this way?!
I immediately felt myself thinking terrible thoughts about this man.
Ready to tell him exactly what I thought of him and where he could go to think about it.
I have a sharp tongue and I don’t suffer fools gladly. But I didn’t do that.
Instead… this situation got me thinking…
What happened to this man?
And even if I engaged in his drama and trauma, would anything be any different for him?
Would he suddenly stop berating us and say, “Oh my gosh! You’re right! I need to rewrite the stories from my past and be a better person. Thank you for that awareness!”
Ummmm… no.
So why would I bother wasting my precious amount of time and energy when I could focus it on being present with my husband and focusing on what really matters.
I shared a post on Instagram that I think will help you with this too. Check it out here.
The gist of it was this…
There are some people in life who are just unhappy.
And no matter how much you try to help those people -through educating, arguing, comforting, supporting -they will never change.
But you can’t get caught up in their drama. Or their trauma.
It will be a distraction from your goals. Your life, health, and kids. Your business.
It will distract you from everything that really matters.
Shake it off. Pray for them. Say holy cuss words. Have your process.
But then let it go.
You are here for more important things.
Focus on that.
Now, I invite you to take the time to think about what distractions you get caught up in in your own life.
Maybe it’s drama. Maybe it’s procrastination. Or an unrealistic body image. Or blaming others.
It might be perfectionism, watching the news, or staying stuck.
Get clear on the distractions in your life that hold you back from being able to focus on your dreams.
Then choose ONE to focus on for the next 3 weeks. Notice when you’re tempted to engage in the distraction and plan in advance for what you can do instead.
This will get you one step closer to becoming the SELF you want to be. In other words, to being SELF Made.
Love you!
Cynthia
