How My Body Told Me That My Life Was Off Track
This week Zak has been out of town for an obligation and Rain is with her dad.
Now, I love my family more than kittens love milk but I was also looking forward to some quiet time. You know, “white space”.
I saw this as a great opportunity to reconnect with mySELF.
Maybe go for long walks. Eat simple dinners. Breathe.
At least that was the plan.
To quote Mike Tyson (something I never thought I would say), “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
And no, no one punched me in the mouth.
BUT, my body did punch me in the head. Kinda. Let me explain…
The Monday after they both had gone, I woke up with a wildly painful migraine.
It lasted for 3-days.
Yep, that’s how my body decided to tell me that my life was off track.
An email would have worked just fine but… no.
Anyway… what I realized while having this “white space” (and having my body be a drama queen) is that I was out of alignment with my Future SELF.
You see, creating your Future Self isn’t a one-and done kinda deal.
You gotta keep checking in.
Asking…
- Where are you in alignment with the Identity of your Future SELF?
- Where are you not?
- Do you still even want the same things as you used to?
- What ELSE do you want to enjoy in your life?
What I realized is that I haven’t been fully in alignment with who I’m choosing to become.
I found myself doing work that doesn’t serve me. Behaviors that don’t take me closer to my Future SELF.
And that didn’t feel good.
Now, what I could have done was check in with mySELF earlier.
You can’t “set and forget” your future. You gotta be there, tending the garden. Pulling the weeds. Planting new seeds.
You get to keep reimagining how good your life can be and then stepping into that life over and over.
So, that’s what I’ve been doing this week.
It’s not quite the “white space” I wanted but it’s exactly what I needed.
Today, I invite you to explore YOUR Future Self.
Are you acting in alignment with it? Where are you stuck? What do you need to let go of? Embrace? Transform?
Keep reading and I’ll give you three simple steps to make this process fun, no 3-day migraine required.
3 STEPS TO REIMAGINE YOURSELF
It takes courage to look around and decide that you want something different.
So, ask yourSELF… Is this really the life you want to live?
3 Steps To Reimagine YourSELF
First, find a quiet place you can relax and reconnect to the deep essence of who you are and who you want to become.
Next, get a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. Label the two columns you created, “Past & Present Self” and “Future Self”.
Then, do this:
- Reflect – In the “Past & Present Self” column, write down things you’re choosing to leave there. What Identities are no longer serving you? One of mine was “the hardest worker in the room”. I no longer need or want to be that person so I put it in this column.
- Reimagine – In the “Future Self” column, write down the new Identity you’re choosing to create and/or become. One of mine was “someone who puts their health first, no matter what else is happening.”
- Reinvent – This step is a two-parter so let’s do this…
- Take a deep breath and grieve your Past & Present Self. Let go of who you used to be. Use a ritual if it helps. A simple one is tearing the paper in half and burning this column, releasing it all to the flames. You could also bury the list, write items on the list on rocks and throw them in a body of water, or even give a eulogy for your Past and Present Self. Do what serves.
- Then, take ONE step in the direction of your Future Self. Choose something in that column if you’d like. For example, if your Future Self is a morning person, set the alarm on your clock right now for the time you will get up tomorrow. If your Future Self makes health a priority, go for a walk, workout, or take a supplement right now. Let’s step BOLDLY into your Future Self! Experiment with new ways of working, playing, learning, connecting, resting, and just BEing.
Remember, reimagining is what we want at some point in the future. Reinventing is how we get there.
From here on, you’re going to live every day as your Future Self. You won’t be perfect and you won’t always get it right. Ask me how I know.
But, as long as you’re showing up daily, focused on your new Identity and becoming your Future Self, you will get to where you’re going, no migraines required.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, SPIRITUAL
Here are some fun things I’m using to embrace SELF Care…
Physical: I’ve been enjoying this stretching routine all week and I don’t even like stretching! Seriously, I’m addicted.
Mental: I started reading A Renaissance of Our Own: A Memoir & Manifesto on Reimagining by Rachel Cargle and it’s so good. She had me at this line… We “discover the beauty of what could be when we give ourselves permission to sample a version of life on the other side of impossible.” Soooo juicy!
Bonus tip: When you feel disrespected or disliked, serotonin levels drop. This has a huge impact on your overall mental health and happiness. So, don’t read the comments, stop spending time with Negative Nancy, and get yourself some sunlight (it boosts serotonin levels)!
Spiritual: I’ve been embracing unfocused thinking time this week as a spiritual practice. Yes, that’s actually a thing. Last night, I lit this candle and watched the sun set wrapped in this snuggly throw, sipping a glass of Dry Farm Wines. I didn’t DO anything. I was just present with mySELF. Remember, your relationship with yourself is the most important one you have.
